Project Canvas Becomes YouView

Project Canvas was recently rebranded as YouView TV. This is a bit step in the progress of the new IPTV project. YouView TV is supposed to be the next generation so marketeers wanted to keep the brand similar - YouView - Freeview. You can clearly see what they have done.

So what is the purpose of YouView TV?

The fact YouView is a branded open platform is important for internet-connected TV Consumer simplicity, plus an open market, creates scale - which reduces costs and increases choice.

YouView has a Strong brand with broad appeal which breeds consumer familiarity. YouView has a Simple, common, user interface which makes complex technology accessible to everyone. There is a Certainty of 'plug and play' which is important to less technical consumers. YouView has Common standards which create a level playing field for content providers and economies of scale for manufacturers. This open approach means the platform is accessible via any ISP. The scale encourages companies and services to create applications for platform. This reduces risk of multiple formats (no repeat of laser disc, betamax, minidisc). We expect to see no emergence of de facto standards that allow private companies to dominate and distort the market. More about how Project Canvas Becomes YouView.

YouView TV in Europe

A joint venture of The BBC, ITV, BT, Channel 4, Talk Talk and Arqiva developed under the name Youview Tv will provide a platform for both free and paid TV content over the Internet. The barriers to entry for TV content providers should be kept as low as possible - the same applies to their side: The YouView TV set-top box is free of subscription and other contracts. With YouView TV, you pay only a one time cost to purchase the YouView TV box (and possibly pay- TV content) - free television is to remain free.

The YouView TV set-top box allows users to watch the last seven days of TV programs, pausing of live TV broadcasts, and the use of specially developed apps. Youview TV can also be integrated into other devices, more information about this will be announced in 2011. Youview TV content is offered primarily for the UK IP space. However it would be conceivable, depending on the rights situation, for the release for an international audience. Questions would be asked as to whether this could be a model for Internet TV for Germany, France and the rest of Europe.
